Codec Preferences

A codec is a technology for compressing and decompressing data. Different telephony systems support different codecs.

Ivanti Voice Default Codecs

Ivanti Voice ships with four default codecs enabled:

  • G.711 MLaw (US)
  • G.711 ALaw (Europe)
  • G.729
  • GSM 6.10

Ivanti Voice can use these codecs in media negotiation without additional configuration. The G.711 Mu-Law (US) or A-Law (Europe) codecs provide the best audio quality. Both operate in full duplex mode at 80Kbps (64 kilobits per second + IP overhead). One-hundred G.711 conversations use approximately 8000kbps (about 12.5% of a 100 mbit LAN). The bit rate decreases when using voice-activity detection on endpoints. Both G.711 codecs have almost no processor requirements. Voice quality problems may appear when voices travel via a gateway (for example, via WAN), as the 100Mbit is squeezed into 384Kbps DSL and network traffic is competitive.

The GSM 6.10 codec is designed for the efficient compression of speech. GSM provides 2:1 compression. GSM conforms to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute recommendation 6.10.

G.729 is the best sounding high-compression codec and provides the best audio quality for one voice. Ivanti recommends using this codec over the Internet, where bandwidth is at premium, as the codec requires a lot of computing power to compress, somewhat less to decompress. G.729 operates at 8 kilobits per second.

Ivanti Voice voice applications must support and have prompts for all enabled codecs. Refer to Voice Application Design for details on voice applications and the Application Builder interface.

Most Ivanti Voice deployments use the default Ivanti Voice codec configuration; however, you can modify the sequence in which Ivanti Voice evaluates codecs, and enable and disable codecs if necessary.

To Configure the Ivanti Voice Codec Settings:

1.On the Management Portal menu window, click System Configuration > Voice Server > Voice Server Configuration. The Voice Server SIP Configuration page opens.

2.Click the Media Configuration tab.

3.To enable a codec, select the radio button next to the codec, and click the Enable button. The screen refreshes and the state of the codec changes to Enabled.

Enabling a codec may cause the codec to change position in the table, changing the way Ivanti Voice evaluates the list of codecs.

You can disable codecs in Ivanti Voice if you do not want your system to be compliant with certain codecs. Select the radio button next to the codec, and click the Disable button. The screen refreshes and the state of the codec changes to Disabled.

4.Ivanti Voice evaluates the list of codecs from top to bottom. To change the evaluation sequence, select the radio button next to the codec and click the Up and Down buttons.

5.Click the Update and Commit Changes button to enact your changes.
