Modifying Existing Packages (WTS)

You can also use existing packages for FAT clients on Windows Terminal Servers. The packages have to be assigned to Terminal Servers or users of Terminal Servers.

If you are working with Terminal Servers you may want to install software (package) on the Terminal Server but customize and provide this software for individual users only on demand.
In this case, Ivanti DSM allows you to configure links:
A link to a specific package can be configured so that only the user portion of the package is installed when the user clicks the link.
This setting is available for all target computers (not only for Terminal Servers).

Background:
First, the computer-related portion of the package is installed on the Terminal Server. The user-related portion is not installed yet, but the individual users will receive a link to the software either on their desktop or in the program group.
A soon as the user clicks this link, the user portion is completely installed and the user can start working with the software.

This procedure implies that the AutoInstaller is not started automatically on the Terminal Server: The AutoInstaller would definitely install the user portion - independent of the settings for post-installing the user portion when clicking the respective link!

MSI packages:
To be able to use the procedure for MSI Packages, please move the links from the MSI file to the MSI Package's eScript where the link can be customized as described above.

How to proceed when installing user-related portions only upon demand:

  • Make sure that the AutoInstaller is not started automatically on the target computers!
  • Open the package in the Packaging Workbench.
  • Select the eScript tab.
  • Double-click the line where the link to the contained software is specified with the CreateLink command.
  • Activate the option Manage user portion.
  • Repeat the steps for all other links in the eScript.
  • Save your changes.
  • Release the changed package and assign it as usual.
