Using the Update Manager

The Update Manager starts automatically after you click setup.exe and begin the update. You can stop and restart the update at any time without losing the current state. All of the actions the Update Manager has started will continue to run in the background. If you exit and restart the Update Manager, it will open to the last active dialog and poll the BLS to update the status of the page.

The Update Manager displays information about each step in the process. Note that if you are updating from DSM versions 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2, some parts of the process may be different.

The Update Manager updates all depots and Management Points in your environment. You cannot select only certain parts of the infrastructure for the update. Using the expert mode allows you to skip individual steps of the update. The expert mode is switched on using the command line option /ExpertMode.

Skipping a step in the Update Manager may lead to an inconsistent state of your DSM environment. Prior to activate the skip checkbox, ensure that skipping is uncritical for the respective step.

Only a few actions are directly executed by the Update Manager. Most tasks are transferred to the respective Management Points which run these tasks asynchronously, and transmit the results to the BLS. The Update Manager requests the status from the BLS in regular intervals, and displays it. This process is referred to as distributed execution.

Many dialogs in the Update Manager list infrastructure objects (depots or Management Points) along with their status. In case an object does not conform or contains errors, the progress bar displays yellow or red and the update stops until the error is found and resolved.

Right-click on the object to display the context menu to repeat the action for that object.
From the context menu, individual objects can also be excluded from further update. In addition, the list of objects can be exported as a CSV file.

After starting the Update Manager you can choose one of the following options:

Option "Prepare DSM environment"

This option creates packages containing the update on the ORG Master Share which are distributed to all depots in your environment. The system checks if your environment can be updated and provides an overview. Based on this information you can decide to proceed with the update.

Option "Update DSM environment"

This option creates packages containing the update on the ORG Master Share which are distributed to all depots in your environment, and allows you to start the update process.
