Network Throughput

Section:

Site

Description:

After detecting "its" site and finding a depot, the DSM Client checks the quality of the network connection to the depot.

In order to determine the quality, the DSM Client reads the file Netperf.dat in the depot’s DSM Share within 2 seconds as often as possible. Hereby 1KB data blocks are transferred.

The quality of the network connection is classified as “slow” if the measured value is smaller than the specified value for network throughput. Depending on the type of protocol and other factors such as the use of SSL, of a proxy or an NTLM authentication, different network loads are generated.

Use the setting Network Threshold Actionto specify which operations the DSM Client may perform when the network connection becomes so slow.

Possible Values:

Positive, even numbers

Default value:

20

Set during/as:

Installation

Set on level:

ORG

Passed on to:

Region, site

Change (via):

ORG, region, site

Reference (via):

SiteProperties.Network Throughput

Reasons for change:

The network is overloaded or not working to full capacity.

Notes/Warnings:

Use the setting Network Threshold Action to specify which operations the DSM Client may perform when the network connection becomes so slow. Please consider the network status when specifying the best threshold value.

To specify the actual network performance and applied communications protocol on a managed computer, please check the log file UpdateCheckDownload_<nr>.log: and CmsExtSvc_<nr>.log as well:

Under network throughput is <value> you can find the respective value.

As a decision support for specifying the best threshold value for the network througput, the following table contains estimations of the approximate network throughput for different network connections and protocols:
