Management Applications

Management applications are applications within the framework of the Ivanti DSM, which use the same server components. Management applications are installed on a Management Point together with their components to provide the functionality of a specific DSM module. The server components include services, agents, and extensions.
In addition to the server components management applications use also the DSM Database and a shared role-based permission concept in order to control access to data and computers.

The shared components are currently being used among others by the following management applications:

  • Business Logic Server / Relay Proxy
  • Distribution Service
  • Event Dispatcher
  • OSD Proxy (DSM OS Deployment
  • Patch Management Server (DSM Patch Management)
  • Service Installation Service
  • HEAT Discovery Integration
  • MDM Integration

Business Logic Server

Business Logic Server is the central information and management component of DSM; it manages the access to the configuration contained in the DSMDB. The configuration of the individual resources (computers, users, software) is stored in the DSMDB where their current status is also logged and provided.

Basically, the Business Logic Server serves as interface with the central DSMDB...

  • when administering the DSM environment in the DSMC
  • when evaluating the status of the DSM environment in the DSMC
  • when determining the current configuration with the DSM Client components
  • when other management systems access the DSMDB (Read or Write access) via Web Service based on SOAP
(including for example, ERP systems , HelpDesk systems or Asset Management systems)

The resources, assignments, permissions and status information are stored centrally in the DSMDB.

Relay Proxy

In a highly distributed environment the Relay Proxy can act as a mediator between clients. The Relay Proxy does not dispose of a own database, it just ensures the connection to the BLS. Depending on the network configuration connecting across the borders of a network and fire walls.

Distribution Service

The Distribution Service is in charge of copying data from depot to depot:

  • Physically, one Distribution Service runs on a Management Point Server.
  • Logically, the Distribution Service is an application of the Management Point.

Event Dispatcher

The Event Dispatcher is a Web Service used to process jobs that are sent to specific managed computers. For example, waking up a computer (Wake On LAN) and immediately executing changes on a managed computer (FastInstall) are tasks for the Event Dispatcher.
The Event Dispatcher is not needed "near" the Central Management Poin. In large environments additional Event Dispatchers may be necessary. For this reason, the Event Dispatcher can be installed as an individual management application.

The Event Dispatcher is especially important for operating system installations with DSM OS Deployment and therefore comes with the installation of OSD Proxy.
Please also see the DSM OS Deployment documentation.

Wake On LAN

If there is no Central Management Point or a Management Point with Event Dispatcher/OSD Proxy available in a Broadcast domain where Wake On LAN is planned, you have to install a separate Management Point with an Event Dispatcher so that WOL can be performed.

Execute Changes

Unlike WOL, changes can be executed immediately on a managed computer without a "local" Event Dispatcher; however, we recommend that you have the Central Management Point or a Management Point with Event Dispatcher/OSD Proxy "in the proximity" of the target computer to guarantee a safe execution.

DSM OS Deployment

Automated provision of operating systems with DSM OS Deployment allows you to save valuable time and achieve greater flexibility due to hardware independence.

Using rule-based assignment enables the complete end-to-end implementation of operating system installation across the whole company, including remote company sites with a narrowband connection.

DSM Patch Management

DSM Patch Management enables a high level of automation for all phases of patch management. This ranges from identifying weak points in the network as well as the security status of all systems to rule-based implementation. This enables you to undertake targeted measures quickly and securely, before anything can happen.

Service Installation Service (SIS)

The Service Installation Service ensures that the DSM Client components are installed reliably.

HEAT Discovery Integration

HEAT Discovery is the ideal tool for inventory management:
All the information relevant to inventory your hardware and software, plus your configurations, is stored in an open data pool and can be analyzed at will. This ensures that your data is always reliable and up-to-date, e.g. for migrations or version updates.

A universal, all-inclusive system
HEAT Discovery can supply information about all the computers in your network - no matter whether they're on a LAN, WAN or mobile network or whether they're desktop PCs or laptops.

The ideal add-on to DSM NetInstall
HEAT Discovery is the ideal add-on to DSM NetInstall. You can use inventory data for inventory-based installations, thus providing you with more options for planning your rollout process.

MDM Integration

With Mobile Device Management Integration ('MDM Integration') you can manage mobile devices, such as smartphones, mobile phones, netbooks and tablets, from within the DSM Console. To manage the mobile devices, you need an SaaS compatible software solution, like HEAT MDM, that provides an interface to a web-based console. MDM Integration integrates this web console into the DSM Console, allowing you to manage the mobile devices directly from within the DSM Console.
