Software Installation with a Storage Medium - General
Installing applications from a storage medium helps the end user to run required software installations or repair work on his computer even if the connection to the company network is weak or if there is only offline work possible.
The end user is provided with a storage medium by the DSM administrator such as CD, DVD or USB memory stick which can be used for package installations. Also, the end user has the option of downloading the package mass data from the network as soon as the computer is online.
In DSM, there are two options for software installations via storage media:
- Online Client Support with Software Installations from a Storage Medium
The computer must be connected to the company network at least once and must have performed a successful synchronization with the Business Logic Server. This guarantees that the required installation information (control data) is transferred to the provided software. The software can be installed later on with a storage medium. Therefore you no longer have to download the package mass data from the network if the clients reside in a site that has a bad connectivity to the company network. In this case, the packages are written to the storage medium by means of a package export process. The installation status of the software is transmitted by client synchronization as soon as the computer logs on to the company network. - Offline Client Support with Software Installations from a Storage Medium
The client computer does not have a network connection. In this case, the control data and the software packages are exported via the computer object. First, the computer must be managed via the storage medium (DSM Client installation) so that the required software can be installed afterwards. Later, the system writes the data of the basic inventory back to the DSM database via the storage medium (re-import).
