Installation Order

In some cases we recommend specifying the installation order of software packages in advance.
This applies especially to Software Sets and OS Installation Sets. They may contain packages that call for the existence of other packages. For example, a hard drive has to be partitioned and formatted before you can install an operating system on it.

Packages

You can specify the installation order of packages with the Installation Order property.
Every time packages are assigned to different installation targets, the system creates policies. In some case, i.e. for certain installation targets it may be necessary to define a specific installation order that differs from the standard package installation order. Therefore you can specify the installation order for individual packages and for individual policies as well.

When you assign a package, the policy initially takes over the package's installation order. However, if there are several policies for one installation target, the DSM administrator can customize the installation order of the policies individually for the installation target.
The policy's installation order is always relevant for the installation.

Packages with a lower installation order value have a higher priority. If a conflict arises (i.e. if the system attempts to install two policies with the same installation order), the system installs the older policy with the lower policy ID first.

Every package type gets a default value for its installation order. You can overwrite the default values. The individual package's installation order value has no effect on the installation of the package. The value is evaluated later when the package is assigned.

Software Sets

The installation order of Software Sets works like the installation order for packages.

There is a difference, however, regarding the order within a Software Set: You can specify the order of the components of a Software Set in the Packaging Workbench; this order is stored in the policy instance when the Software  Set is assigned. Note that this order is binding and cannot be changed.
