Distribution within the Site: Local Depot

Managed computers do not access the master depot but rather their own copy of the package files that is on a local depot. This separation allows the administrator to edit the repository when managed computer users access the repository (i.e., execute packages).

  • Physically, a master depot saves the repositories and packages in the WORK subdirectory of the DSM share.
  • A local depot saves the repositories and packages in the INSTALL subdirectory of the DSM share.

Every depot is automatically also a local depot. A depot can assume both roles of local depot and master depot.

  • If there is only one depot in a site, it is both the master and local depot.
  • All other depots in a site are only local depots.

Distribution within this site copies the files from the WORK directory of the site master depot to the INSTALL directories of the site master depot and the other local depots in the site (if they exist).

By separating the master and local depots, a distribution step is already necessary for the repositories and packages of one depot. For this reason, you also need the Distribution Service if you are using Ivanti DSM with only a single depot.
