Working with Several Management Points

In large environments it is not sufficient to use only one Management Point for communication between managed computers and Configuration Management Database (e.g. Business Logic Server) and for infrastructure services (e.g. Distribution Service).

For such cases, Ivanti DSM offers the possibility of creating several Management Points which function as stand-ins for the Central Management Point on subordinate site structure levels.

In the case of additional Management Points:

  • You can have several Management Points per region or site; however, you can only have one Management application there.
The Distribution Service, Event Dispatcher and OSD Proxy are exceptions - they can occur more than once.
  • Additional Distribution Services can be installed on any Management Point. A database is not required.
In the site structure, the responsible Distribution Service can be specified per region or per site.
  • Additional Event Dispatcher can be installed on any Management Point, even more than one per site structure object. A database is not required.
  • Additional Service Installation Services (SIS) can be installed on any Management Point, e.g. one SIS per network segment. A database is not required.

When considering how many Management Points you wish to use with which management applications, please note the following points:

  • Plan the "responsible" Distribution Services so that as few cross-network actions as possible take place.
In this connection please note that the responsible Distribution Service of a region/site takes over distribution into this region/site. The Distribution Service that is responsible for a given site should therefore also be installed in the Management Point of this site, if possible.
  • If there is no Central Management Point or a Management Point with OSD Proxy available in a Broadcast domain where Wake On LAN is planned, you have to install a separate Management Point with an Event Dispatcher so that WOL can be performed!
