VMware actions
VMware actions let you integrate VMware functionality within Asset Lifecycle Manager. VM tasks can be automated within Asset Lifecycle Manager. When you integrate VM tasks in ALM, they are tracked in the workflow's audit history in the Web console. ALM supports VMware vSphere*. For more information on VMware and virtual machines, see www.vmware.com. Most VMware actions require the use of the vCenter server. These actions are described below.
NOTE: VM host and server names are case-sensitive. If these names are entered incorrectly, the action will not be completed.
Clone VM
The Clone VM action lets you create a full duplicate a of virtual machine and give it a descriptive name.
- Action name: The name of the action.
- VMware integration server: The VMware server to be made available to workflow actions in ALM, as defined in Configuring Asset Lifecycle Manager settings. Select a field mapping, or click the ellipsis to select the server.
- Source datacenter name: The name of the datacenter containing the VM you want to clone.
- Source host name: The name of the host machine associated with the VM you want to clone.
- Source virtual machine name: The name of the virtual machine you want to clone.
- Target virtual machine name: The destination datacenter, host, and virtual machine.
- Clone name: The name of the cloned VM. This name must be unique, or else you will receive an error.
- Authentication: (Advanced) Enter the VMware integration server credentials. If you are selecting a pre-defined VMware Integration Server defined in Settings, the authentication will already be populated.
Power control host
This action controls the power options on the host machine. Power control host actions are recorded in the workflow's Audit history in the Web console.
- Action name: The name of the action.
- VMware integration server: The VMware server to be made available to workflow actions in ALM, as defined in Configuring Asset Lifecycle Manager settings. Select a field mapping, or click the ellipsis to select the server.
- Host system: Type the name of the host system, or click Choose field to select the name. If you are connecting through an ESXi machine, you must enter the IP address, because an ESXi machine doesn't recognize DNS.
- Power operation: Select a power control operation to complete on the host (Reboot, Shutdown, or Power down to standby). Note: Power down to standby cannot be performed on a VMware that does not have Windows installed to it.
- Authentication: (Advanced) Enter the VMware integration server credentials. If you are selecting a pre-defined VMware Integration Server defined in Settings, the authentication will already be populated.
Power control VM
This action lets you control the power options on the virtual machine. Power control VM actions are recorded in the workflow's Audit history in the Web console.
- Action name: The name of the action.
- VMware integration server: The VMware server to be made available to workflow actions in ALM, as defined in Configuring Asset Lifecycle Manager settings. Select a field mapping, or click the ellipsis to select the server.
- Virtual machine name: Type the name of the virtual machine, or click Choose field to select the name. If you are connecting through an ESXi machine, you must enter the IP address, because an ESXi machine doesn't recognize DNS.
- Power operation: Select a power operation to complete on the VM (On, Off, Suspend, Reset, Reboot guest, Shutdown guest, or Standby guest).
- Authentication: (Advanced) Enter the VMware integration server credentials. If you are selecting a pre-defined VMware Integration Server defined in Settings, the authentication will already be populated.
VM snapshot control
The VM snapshot control action lets you manage the snapshot creation/removal process. This action works on any operating system.
- Snapshot operation: Select the operation you want to complete (Create, Remove, Remove all, and Revert).
- Remove children: Removes all snapshots below the one selected in the folder structure. Options are True or False.
- Snapshot name: Type the name of the snapshot.
- Description: (optional) Type additional information about the virtual machine.
- Authentication: (Advanced) Enter the VMware integration server credentials. If you are selecting a pre-defined VMware Integration Server defined in Settings, the authentication will already be populated.
VMotion
Use the VMotion action to complete a live migration of running virtual machines from one physical server to another without service interruption. A storage area network (SAN) is required for VMotion to work properly.
- Target host name: The name of the host you want to migrate the virtual machine to.
- Target pool: The resource pool the virtual machine will end up in. This must be within the same data center as the virtual machine to be migrated.
- Priority: (optional) Sets precedence compared to other currently-operating VM actions. Options are High, Default, and Low. For example, the High option sets the particular VMotion action to run before any other VM actions.
- Source host name: The name of the source host you want to migrate from.
- Target datastore: The location where you want the virtual machine's datastore to be moved to.
- Virtual machine powered-on state: (optional) Requires that the virtual machine's powered-on state be equal to the selected value for the migration to be successful. Options are Powered on, Powered off, and Suspended.
- Authentication: (Advanced) Enter the VMware integration server credentials. If you are selecting a pre-defined VMware Integration Server defined in Settings, the authentication will already be populated.
