Using the Filter Builder

The Filter Builder tool is only accessible to the Xtraction administrator.

Filters are conditions imposed on the data to be extracted from your data sources, restricting what designers and viewers can see and work with. As administrator, you can use the Filter Builder to create an initial set of filters for each target data source. Each filter imposes one set of conditions on the data source to which it applies.

The Filter Builder runs a discovery process that inspects your data-source installation’s data and then creates filters for the most-used values. You can augment this process by reviewing the filters created and adding any that should be there but weren't identified by the discovery.

To create filters with the Filter Builder

Follow this procedure to create an initial set of filters for one data source at a time. Afterward, review the results and add more filters manually as needed.

1.At bottom of the application window, click the Administration > Filter Builder link.

2.Click the database icon to select a data source.

3.For the selection period, use the default of the last 30 days, or click the calendar icon to select a different time period.

4.In the Add Condition dialog, you have the following options:

Dynamic date filter: Create a condition based on past, present, or future periods of time. Scroll down the list to specify the time period.

Drop-down list: Select from options that narrow the condition to during, not during, before, or after the time period selected.

Include current (*): Select for the condition to include the current day.

Fixed date filter: Create a condition with a fixed start and end calendar date. To select a different year than the current one, click the icon next to Start Date.

Drop-down list: Select from options that narrow the condition to during, not during, before, or after the dates selected.

5.After setting your conditions, click OK.

6.In the Parent Folder area, select a location to save the filters for this data source.

7.Click OK to start the process of filter discovery and creation.

The Filter Builder inspects the data source and creates filters for frequently used data values. The filters are saved within the selected parent folder, with sub-folders created automatically based on what the tool creates.
