Retiring a device

Retiring a device archives the data for that device and removes the configurations and settings applied by Ivanti EPMM (no personal information or settings on the device are impacted). The entry for the device no longer appears in the Device & Users page (unless you specifically search for retired devices.) The device user is notified that the software has been removed.

If the retired device is also in the ActiveSync Association view, it remains there. However, because the device is retired, it can no longer access the ActiveSync server. You can manually remove the device from the ActiveSync Association page. See “Removing ActiveSync phones” in the Ivanti Standalone Sentry Guide for EPMM.

Retiring an Android device means the device user cannot access any AppConnect apps or data. For details, see the AppConnect Guide for EPMM.

Client device users can also retire devices, see Retiring a device in Ivanti Mobile@Work for Android .

If you have duplicate devices, see Managing Duplicate Devices.

For Ivanti EPMM 11.10.0.0 and later

For devices with "Retire Pending" state in the following modes, when the administrator uses the Retire command on these devices, a warning displays notifying that the Retire command is not supported on these devices.

  • Work Managed Device mode

  • Work Managed Device - Non-GMS mode (AOSP)

  • Managed Device with Work profile mode

When the administrator uses the Retire command on devices, a warning displays notifying that one or more devices in this list are corporate owned Android devices in Fully Managed mode (Device Owner) or Managed Device with Work Profile (Android 8-10 devices, COPE.) The Retire command is not supported on these devices. Wipe command is supported in these modes. (Previously, in Ivanti EPMM 11.9.0.0 and before, the warning message was different an was applicable to Work Managed Device and Work Profile for Company Owned Device modes.)

If the administrator selects Retire after acknowledging this warning, and if any of the selected devices are in Work Managed Device mode, Managed Device with Work Profile mode, then Retire will not work on those devices. A message will display stating "Mobile Platform not Supported."

Procedure

  1. Go to Device & Users > Devices.
  2. Select the check box for the device.
  3. Select Actions > Retire.

    The Retire dialog opens.

  4. Confirm the device information and enter an optional note. This information will be saved in the Audit Logs.
  5. [Optional] Select Force Retire. Usually, when you issue a Retire command for a device, it is moved to a Retired state and is considered "Retire Pending." Sometimes the devices remain in the Retire Pending state. Ivanti EPMM offers a Force Retire check box to make sure the device is Retired. For more information, seeAutomated Device Cleanup.

From the self-service portal, the retire action is Force Retire.

  6. In the One or more devices in this list... section, select the check box to indicate your understanding that the Retire command on devices in Fully Managed or Managed Device with Work Profile mode is not supported. This check box applies to Android devices only.
  7. Select Retire.
  8. The device user receives notification of the action.

To see a list of retired devices, see “Searching for retired devices” in the Getting Started with Ivanti EPMM.
