AppTunnel

The Standalone Sentry can be configured to create AppTunnels for AppConnect apps.

An AppTunnel provides each AppConnect app a unique secure connection through the Standalone Sentry to a back-end application resource. Each AppTunnel is a unique combination of user, app, and device, and provides visibility into the user and the device accessing an app. For example, Standalone Sentry creates an AppTunnel for UserA using AppA on DeviceA, and a new AppTunnel for UserA using AppB on DeviceA.

Note: You can use a combination of Integrated Sentry for email and Standalone Sentry for AppTunnel.

For information on how to configure AppTunnel, see the AppConnect and AppTunnel Guide.

Advanced AppTunnel

With Advanced AppTunnel, the AppTunnel feature is enhanced to provide support for TCP in addition to HTTP and HTTPS. You configure a TCP tunnel service, which creates a secure tunnel for TCP traffic for applications.

Note:

UDP is not supported.

An additional MobileIron license is required for Advanced AppTunnel.

For information on how to configure a TCP tunnel, see “Adding an entry for Standalone Sentry on MobileIron Core”.

Advanced AppTunnel with iOS devices

Advanced AppTunnel is supported for iOS 7 through iOS 8.3 devices only. You can configure a TCP tunnel service, which creates a secure tunnel for TCP traffic for applications like, Jabber, VNC, or any managed AppStore app or AppConnect app that supports TCP or HTTP.

Note:

AppConnect is not required for Advanced AppTunnel on iOS devices.

MobileIron Tunnel is required on the device.

Advanced AppTunnel with iOS devices supports the following use cases:

Per app VPN and Safari domains with MobileIron Tunnel

Single sign-on with Kerberos proxy

Client certificate authentication to backend resource.

Advanced AppTunnel with Android devices

Advanced AppTunnel is supported for AppConnect-enabled hybrid web apps, including PhoneGap apps. These apps use Android WebView and WebKit technologies to access and display web content.

Note: An app written in Java without using Android WebView and WebKit technologies can use only standard AppTunnel to tunnel HTTP/S connections. MobileIron supports standard AppTunnel in Java apps only if app uses the HTTP/S APIs specified in the MobileIron AppConnect for Android App Developers Guide.

Contact the application vendor or developer to find out whether to configure Advanced AppTunnel or standard AppTunnel.
