Managing Duplicate Devices

This section is applicable to Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows 8 devices.

By selecting Enable managing duplicate devices, administrators can set duplicate active devices to the Retire or Wipe status or to the Unknown status. Administrators can also set a scan schedule for either Daily, Weekly or Monthly.

Removal of device records from the Ivanti EPMM database applies to the following retired device types:

  • Android Enterprise devices - When a new Android device is registered, Ivanti EPMM matches its device attributes (MAC, Serial Number, etc.) and its registration status (mode) to any existing entries. If the latest entry is found to duplicate the previous (old) entry, the old entry deleted and an error is entered into the logs.
  • Active Devices with no device details (iOS and Windows 8 devices)
  • Devices with no subject holder (iOS and Windows 8 devices)
  • Devices with the below statuses (iOS Only)
    • Enrollment Verified
    • Enrolling
    • Enrolled

Ivanti EPMM matches devices by device type. Ivanti EPMM uses various device information to determine whether a device is a duplicate or not. For information on finding devices by device type for Apple User Enrollment, see Apple documentation.

Device Action > Retire or Wipe the old device - (default)

Wipe takes precedence on platform where both Retire and Wipe actions are available.

When a new Android device is registered, Ivanti EPMM matches its device attributes (MAC, Serial Number, etc.) and its registration status (mode) to any existing entries. If the latest entry is found to duplicate the previous (old) entry, the old entry deleted and an error is entered into the logs.

Select an option:

  • Retire old devices - When selecting Retire, Ivanti EPMM is not actually retiring the device; instead, the device is marked as "Retired" in the EPMM database. All the entries with "Retired" status are then removed from the database through the Scheduler. Note: Android devices that do not support Retire will not have any action taken on them.
  • Wipe old duplicate Android Devices - for unsupervised devices. Once selected, device moves into "Wipe Pending" state. The administrator will need to go to System Settings > Users & Devices > Automated Device Cleanup and select Wipe Pending.
  • Wipe duplicate old supervised Apple Devices - Once selected, device moves into "Wipe Pending" state. The administrator will need to go to System Settings > Users & Devices > Automated Device Cleanup and select Wipe Pending.

Device Action > Mark the old device as "Unknown"

The old device is marked as Unknown. Duplicate entries caused by other types of registrations will be dealt with via compliance policy actions.
