Recommended settings when using Microsoft Windows 10

When Workspace Control sessions run on Windows 10 machines, Ivanti recommends to configure the following settings in the Workspace Control Console.

Uncheck Disable Active Setup (skips first-time shell init)

Windows 10 performs several important actions during the Active Setup. To allow such actions to be executed correctly, uncheck the setting Disable Active Setup (skips first-time shell init), under Composition > Applications > Settings tab.

By default, the Disable Active Setup (skips first-time shell init) setting is not checked.

Windows Shell shortcut creation recommendation

When installing Workspace Control in an environment where users have existing Start Menu layouts for Windows 10, to use Windows Shell shortcut creation in Merge mode, the following configuration preserves the existing Start Menu layouts.

  1. Under Composition > Applications > Settings tab, set Windows Shell shortcut creation to Merge with unmanaged shortcuts.

  2. Under Composition > Applications > Start Menu or Application List tabs, ensure that applications have the following settings configured on their Properties > Shortcuts tab > Automatic shortcuts:

    • Uncheck option Replace existing unmanaged shortcuts.

    • Uncheck option Create Start Menu shortcut.

    • Set option If managed shortcut was not used to Intercept new process and apply configuration.

Result:
When a user first starts a Workspace Control session, no tiles are added to the Start Menu for new managed applications (those that are not yet present in the user's Windows 10 profile). Beginning with the user’s second session, tile management as defined in the Workspace Control Console is applied to all sessions.

When the settings in the Automatic shortcuts section are configured differently than recommended above, users experience the following changes to the layout of tiles pinned to their Start Menu:

  • The tile sizes of these applications are set to medium.

  • The Start Menu groups that contain these applications are lost. All tiles are put in a single, nameless group.

These changes apply to unmanaged applications that have a managed equivalent in the Workspace Control Console, but under a different name than the unmanaged application.
