Backing Up and Restoring Avalanche

In order to retain Avalanche system information, back up the databases and software packages regularly. If for any reason the databases are deleted or corrupted, you can restore them from the backup files.

In order for a backup of the Enterprise Server database to be valid, you must back up the Avalanche software packages at the same time. To maintain accurate reporting information, the Statistics Server database should be backed up on the same schedule. Restoring your database without restoring the correct software package files may cause serious problems. While backing up or restoring your databases and software packages, you must stop the Avalanche Enterprise Server and Statistics Server.

You should create a backup directory before performing the backup procedure. Use the same directory for storing the database backups and the software package backups.

You must back up and restore your encryption key separately from the database. For more information, see Backing Up the Database Encryption Key

These processes use WinZip to compress the software packages. If you choose to use another compression method, refer to the respective user guide.

To back up the databases and Avalanche software packages

1.To access the Services list, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.
The Services window appears.

2.To stop the Enterprise Server, select Wavelink Enterprise Server from the list and click Stop the service.

3.To stop the Statistics Server, select Wavelink StatServer from the list and click Stop the service.

4.Open the File Explorer and navigate to the avapackages directory in the location you installed Avalanche. The location may depend on the version of Avalanche you have installed.

5.Right-click the avapackages folder and select Winzip > Add to Zip file.
The Add dialog box appears.

6.Type the location of the backup directory in the Add to archive text box and click Add.
The software packages are zipped and saved in the backup directory.

7.Backup the Avalanche databases using the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. For information on using the Management Studio, see the SQL Server documentation.

8.Back up the encryption key by copying the avalanche.ikeyfile from the Enterprise Server installation directory to a secure location, separate from the databases.

9.To restart the Enterprise Server from the Services window, select Wavelink Enterprise Server from the list and click Start the service.

10.To restart the Statistics Server from the Services window, select Wavelink StatServer from the list and click Start the service.

The databases and software packages are backed up.

To restore the databases and Avalanche software packages

1.To access the Services list, click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.
The Services window appears.

2.To stop the Enterprise Server, select Wavelink Enterprise Server from the list and click Stop the service.

3.To stop the Statistics Server, select Wavelink StatServer from the list and click Stop the service.

4.Open the File Explorer and navigate to your backup directory.

5.Right-click on avapackages.zip. Select WinZip > Extract to....
The WinZip Extract dialog box appears.

6.Specify the same directory you copied the packages from and click Extract.
The software packages are restored to Avalanche.

7.Restore the Avalanche databases using the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. For information on using the Management Studio, see the SQL Server documentation.

8.Restore the encryption key by copying the avalanche.ikeyfile into the Enterprise Server installation directory you originally copied it from.

9.To restart the Enterprise Server from the Services window, select Wavelink Enterprise Server from the list and click Start the service.

10.To restart the Statistics Server from the Services window, select Wavelink StatServer from the list and click Start the service.

The packages and databases are restored.
