Convert to License Unit Dialog Box

You can move or copy an application to a new or existing license unit.

Getting There

  1. Specify what you want to do with the application:
    • Move the selected application(s) into a new license unit: Select this option to move the application out of one license unit and into a new license unit that you'll define in the subsequent dialog box. The new license unit is added, and will be displayed in the left pane of the License Units panel under the same categories as the original.
      • Example use: Two different versions of an application are installed on machines in your organization, each under a different licensing agreement, and you want to track them separately. Suppose that you have a per-seat licensing agreement for Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard and a concurrent use license for Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard. By default, Cherwell Asset Management configures both applications into one license unit, called Adobe Acrobat Standard.
      • After selecting the Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard application in the Adobe Acrobat Standard license unit and right-clicking your selection to open this dialog box, select this first option and select OK. In the Convert Applications to License Unit dialog box, enter the name of the license unit to create, and which versions of the application to include in it.
      • Upon completion, consider renaming the original Adobe Acrobat Standard license unit to reflect the applications that are still in it.
    • Move the selected application(s) into an existing license unit: Select this option to remove the application from one license unit and into another existing license unit.
      • Example use: You have one or more versions of an application that you want to track separately within the same license unit.
    • Copy the selected Windows application(s) into a new license unit: Select this option if you want to separately monitor Windows applications that use identical main executable files. With this option, you copy an application to a new license unit and assign it a GUID to distinguish it from other installations.
      • Example use: Two applications that have the same executable file are installed on machines in your organization, and you want to monitor them separately.

After selecting the first application's unit and right-clicking your selection to open this dialog box, select this second option and select OK. In the Add Existing Applications to New License Unit dialog box, browse to the appropriate GUID and select OK to complete the conversion process.

Upon completion, consider renaming the original license unit to reflect the applications that are still in it.

    • Copy the selected Windows application(s) into an existing license unit: Select this option if you want to separately monitor Windows applications that use identical main executable files. With this option, you copy an application to an existing license unit and assign it a GUID to distinguish it from other installations.
      • Example use: You have another version of an application that does not have a GUID assigned to it, and you already created a license unit for it.
      • After selecting the application in its license unit and right-clicking your selection to open this dialog box, select this third option and select OK. In the Add Existing Applications to Existing License Unit dialog box, select the license unit, fill in the other fields, and select OK to complete the conversion process.
  2. Click OK to continue with the conversion procedure.
You can also move (not copy) an application from one license unit to an existing license unit. To do so, cancel out of this dialog box and move the application to the existing license unit.
