Staging of Package Data
Ivanti DSM employs staging technology to ensure a smooth software deployment process.
Staging definition:Intelligently controlled download of installation data to managed computers and management of this data, independent of the actual installation. Keeps network load to a minimum. The installation data is the "real" package data: The data which is installed on the managed computer. Depending on the scope of the package, this can involve large amounts of data.
Staging has the advantage that it allows for a fast, smooth and stable installation even if the network connection is weak or a computer is working offline.
The installation data is downloaded by the DSM Client and stored locally. You can set a Staging mode for the policy. The default setting for each policy is the Standard staging mode. If required, you can also set the modes Emergency Rollout and Changeover with date.
To ensure that the installation data is up-to-date, the DSM Client compares the local installation data with the installation data on the depot if required, provided a network connection is available.
Details on staging can be found under Download process.
Packages for which staging is activated are automatically stored on the managed computer prior to installation.
The only exceptions are if this is not possible for technical reasons (e.g. computers which do not have a network connection for long periods of time and computers which do not have sufficient disk drive capacity for staging). In such cases, the administrator receives a message in the log files.
Packages can optionally be stored locally for offline repairs even after installation by using the setting Enable offline repair.
