Integrating Migration Manager in DSM

Although Migration Manager is still supported, as of DSM 2022.2, its functionality has been replaced with Ivanti Workspace Control Core Edition. For details, see the Ivanti Workspace Control Core Edition Quick Start Guide (PDF).

Integrating Ivanti Migration Manager in Ivanti DSM has many advantages, for example being able to use the existing DSM infrastructure. With the DSM infrastructure you can deploy backup and restore tasks directly on all computers across the network, rather than distributing them manually on individual computers.

The flexible configuration of Ivanti DSM allows you to implement individual requirements without great effort. You can select different backup configurations individually when assigning computers or computer groups. You can also provide the data you backed up individually, for example per site or per region.

Ivanti DSM processes backup and restore tasks as packages. These packages call the Migration Manager program file and start a backup configuration you specified in advance using different variables and parameters.

You can find different predefined packages on the DSM product DVD. They are defined for

migration scenarios that require you to transfer the user data of an individual computer to another individual computer or from one operating system to another operating system.

You can easily use these packages as template for other scenarios by customizing the respective script. Refer to the Automating Migration Manager user's guide for more information on the parameters you can use.

System Requirements

The system requirements for Ivanti Migration Manager are basically the same as for Ivanti DSM. There are differences, however, regarding the supported operating systems and applications.

Operating Systems

Backing up and restoring user-specific data is only relevant for client operating systems.

Migration Manager supports all Windows Client Operating Systems that DSM also supports.

Applications

Regarding the backup of user-specific data, there are many differences between the individual applications.

Migration Manager supports the most common applications, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat and various internet browsers. The Migration Manager User's Guide provides a detailed list of the supported applications. Find the Migration Manager User's Guide on the DSM Product DVD or in the installation directory after installing Migration Manager.

Activating Ivanti Migration Manager

When you activate Ivanti Migration Manager for the first time in your Ivanti DSM environment, we recommend the following steps in the order below:

Install Migration Manager

Start Migration Manager

Configure Migration Manager. In this step you specify the user data you want to back up and which additional entries are required in the DSMC.

Import Migration Manager packages. Ivanti DSM provides predefined packages you can use to back up and restore user-specific data. Import these packages to the Software Library.

Back up user data with Migration Manager packages. Use the predefined Migration Manager packages to automatically back up the user-specific data of a computer. You can back up the data of the user who is currently logged on, for all users or for a specific user.

Restore user data with Migration Manager packages. Use the predefined Migration Manager packages to automatically restore the user-specific data of a computer. You can back up the data of the user who is currently logged on or for all users.
