License matching

Now that you have imported your licenses, you need to make sure that the software that they reference is matched to an entry in the DSL. When you import licenses, License Optimizer automatically tries to match license records to a product entry in the Definitive Software Library (DSL). Unmatched licenses are those license records that have been imported but which couldn't be automatically matched to a product in the DSL. In this section, we are going to match unmatched licenses using the License Matching page.

To match licenses using a proposed match:

1.On the menu bar, under Entitlement, click License Matching.
The License Matching page appears, showing all unmatched license records.

Above the data grid, a message reports the number of unmatched license records that License Optimizer has identified potential product matches for in relation to the total number of unmatched license records. In the example above, there are 964 licenses that need matching, and the system has suggested matches for 962 of them.

The Recognised Product column for each row shows potential matches from the DSL for the unmatched license, along with a match value in square brackets before the product name. Higher match values, which appear first in the list, represent a higher confidence in the product match. The match value is summarized in the Quality column as High, Medium, or Low, enabling you to filter the list so that you can more easily focus on high-quality potential matches.

2.Use the menu to add or remove columns on the data grid to help you identify the appropriate product from the information in the license record.
Columns that are not initially included, but which you can add to the data grid, include columns relating to entitlement. Removing columns increases the width of the remaining columns so that you can more easily read the details of, for example, the Recognised Product column.

You can use the filter box on the DataSource column to display only unmatched licenses from the data source that you imported.

3.Select the required product match from the potential matches in the drop-down list in the Recognised Product column, then select the associated check box in the first column. You can do this for multiple rows.

4.Click Commit Matches from the License Matching page gears menu.
The Accept Matches dialog appears, asking how you want to apply the matches.

5.Select how you want to save the matches that are being committed. You can:

Assign product to selected entitlements only – assigns only the selected license to the product

Assign product to selected entitlements and all similar descriptions – assigns the selected license and any similar licenses in the system to the product

Assign product to selected entitlements and all similar descriptions, and also for future entitlement with these descriptions – assigns the selected license and any similar licenses in the system to the product, along with any similar licenses imported in the future

The licenses are matched to the selected products, and the list updates to show the remaining unmatched licenses.

Sometimes there won't be an appropriate product available in the Recognised Product column, so you need to search for a matching product.

To search for a matching product for an unmatched license:

1.On the License Matching page, click Products above the list of unmatched licenses.
The Search Product panel appears.

2.Type the product name you are searching for in the Search Product field, then click Search.
A search results list appears.

3.Select the handle handle alongside the license you want to match, and drag it onto the matching product in the search results list.
The Accept Matches dialog appears, asking how you want to accept the match.

4.Select how you want to save the match, using the options described above.

We all make mistakes

Sometimes, you will match the wrong product to a license by mistake. Don't worry, you can fix this from the Software Library page.

Take great care in deleting recognition phrases or files.

To remove a mistaken license recognition phrase:

1.On the menu bar, under Data Management, click Software Library.
The Software Library page appears, which gives you access to your Definitive Software Library. This includes both the global DSL maintained by Ivanti, and your personal DSL for items that are specific to your estate.

Software Library page

2.Click Quick Search.
The Select Product dialog appears.

3.Type the name of the product you want to find, then click Search.
A data grid appears on the dialog.

4.Use the search and pagination controls on the data grid to find the required software title, then click Select.

The Select Product dialog closes and the Software Library page updates to show the Detail panel for the selected item at the bottom of the page.

5.Click the Recognition Phrases tab.
The list of matching phrases for the software item appears.

The Type column contains icons to indicate the type of matched phrase:

program icon – program

operating system icon – operating system

license icon – license

6.Click Trash icon alongside the entry you mistaught and want to remove.

If you have deleted mistaken license recognition phrases, you need to re-import the license file that contains the licenses that you mistaught with the Import Method set to Overwrite. When you re-import this file, License Optimizer automatically recognizes all of the licenses that you correctly taught it and displays on the License Matching page any licenses that you removed the recognition phrase for, so that you can teach it the correct phrase.

If you have deleted a recognition file or phrase for a program, you need to run recognition for the changes to take effect. You can run recognition by clicking Initiate Recognition at the top of each of the Recognition tabs.

What next?

Only valid license records can be used in reconciliation, so we need to make sure that the licenses we have in the system are valid: License validation.
