Connecting Android Devices

Smart devices using Android OS version 4.1 or higher can be enrolled in Avalanche. The Avalanche ANS Enabler routes traffic directly between the device and the Avalanche smart device server and must be installed on the device.

Android devices can be enrolled with an Android Enterprise for additional management options. Android Enterprise enrollment differs from normal Android enrollment. For more information, see Android Enterprise.

Smart devices also require an SSL certificate to securely connect to the smart device server. For more information, see Obtaining SSL Certificates.

Creating an enrollment rule

In addition to installing the Enabler, you must create at least one enrollment rule in the Avalanche Console in order to connect Android devices to Avalanche.

1.In the Navigation Tree, select the region or folder you want to create a rule for and click View.
The Details page appears.

2.Click Add in the Enrollment Rules panel.
The Enrollment Rule dialog box appears.

3.Enter an enrollment ID and password in the text boxes.
Each enrollment rule must have a unique ID. We recommend that enrollment rules use IDs that indicate the purpose of the enrollment rule.

4.Select Use ANS notifications.

5.If you want the device to display a End User License Agreement (EULA) to the device user, you can upload one of your own or modify the template provided by Ivanti. Click Download template to view the sample template, or click Browse to upload your own text file.

6.Click Save.

7.Click the Needs Deployment in the upper right corner of the Details page.

8.Select Deploy Now.

-Or-

Select Deploy Later and enter a date and time for the deployment.

9.Click Finish.
A system message will appear in the console when the deployment is completed.

Allowing installation from outside sources

Because the Avalanche ANS Enabler is installed from the Wavelink site, instead of the Google Play Store, you must enable installation from outside sources to be able to install it.

On Android 7.1 or older, navigate to Settings > Security > Unknown sources on the device, and enable the Unknown sources option.

On Android 8.0 or newer, navigate to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Special access > Install unknown apps on the device. Select the browser on the device and set it to Allow.

Installing the enabler and connecting to Avalanche

After installing the enabler, the device will be able to connect to Avalanche's smart device server.

1.Use the device to download the ANS Enabler from the download site.

2.From the device notifications, tap the application to install it.

3.Tap Accept to agree to the terms and conditions.

4.Tap Activate to allow the application to be a device administrator.

5.On the Settings page type the Enrollment ID, Password, and Server address in the text boxes; then tap Register.
The device is placed in the folder associated with the enrollment rule and receives any smart device profiles applied to the folder.
