Software Categories and Groups
Cherwell Asset Management uses software categories to group like license units by function in the Cherwell Software Identification Database (CSID).
Predefined software categories are organized into category groups, and are shown in the left pane of the License Units panel, which can make it easier for you to find specific license units by function. For example, the Business function specific category group includes categories like Bar coding, Office suites, Project management, and others.
Note the following about software categories and groups:
- You can rename software categories and groups. When you do so, the new name appears in the License Units panel and in the Properties dialog boxes of affected license units, but the original names in the CSID are unchanged.
- You can move license units from one category to another, but once moved, you cannot revert a license unit to its original category. Instead, you can find the license unit in the full list and either drag it to another category or change its category in the license unit's Properties dialog box.
- You can create your own software categories and groups. Categories and groups you add are not overwritten when you install updates to the CSID.
- You can only delete any user-created software categories and groups. If the category you want to delete contains license units, you are prompted to confirm the operation. Any license units that were in that category still exist, but are not part of any category.
