Connecting Android Devices to the Avalanche Server

Smart devices using Android OS 2.3 and versions 4.0+ can be enrolled in Avalanche. You must create at least one enrollment rule before you can connect Android or iOS devices. The device must be configured with the enrollment ID and password in order to connect to the server. For information about creating enrollment rules, see Creating Enrollment Rules for Smart Devices.

When you are enrolling Android devices, the user has the option to provide the username for LDAP authentication and email address for Active Directory or Microsoft Exchange. These must be provided for user targeting, or when the user has an Exchange account and you are going to manage the device's Microsoft Exchange options.

To manage devices using an Android OS, install the Avalanche Enabler for Android. When you install the Enabler on Android, the Enabler must be set as a device administrator. In order to uninstall the Enabler, you must first remove the app as a device administrator.

If you are installing multiple Android devices and want to use a bulk enrollment process to save time, see Android Bulk Enrollment.

There are two types of Enabler for Android devices: an Enabler that uses Google Cloud Messaging (GCM), and an Enabler that uses the Avalanche Notification Service (ANS).

The Enabler using GCM is available in the Google Play store. This Enabler routes traffic through the Google messaging service. If you get the Enabler from the Google Play store, you can have the Enabler update automatically each time Wavelink releases a new Enabler. If you are not certain what the device supports, check for the Google Play Store app on the device. If the device does not have the Google Play Store app, it cannot use a GCM Enabler.

The Enabler using ANS is available from the Wavelink web site. This Enabler routes traffic directly between the device and the Avalanche Smart device server. The ANS Enabler does not automatically check for and download updates.

Install the type of Enabler that is easiest for you to use.

For a list of ports the Enabler for Android uses to communicate to the Smart device server, see Port Information.

If you get the application from a source other than directly from the Google Play store, you may need to enable the Settings > Applications > Unknown sources option on the device before you begin to install.

For Samsung SAFE devices, a end user license agreement (EULA) appears during the Android enrollment process. For more information, see Samsung SAFE.

To install the Enabler from the Google Play Store on an Android device:

1.Download the Avalanche app from the Google Play store by navigating to the URL below:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wavelink.android

If you want to use Kiosk Mode or ANS on your Android devices, you must download the Enabler from the Wavelink Web site. These features are not offered in the Google Play version of the Enabler. All other functions, including Samsung SAFE features, can be found in the Google Play app.

2.From the device Notifications, tap the application to install it.

3.The Terms and Conditions appear. Tap Accept to agree to the terms.

4.The app asks if you want to allow the application to be a device administrator. Tap Activate.

5.The Settings page appears. Type the Enrollment ID, Password, and Server in the text boxes and tap Register.

The server address is the Smart device server's hostname or IP address. Unless the address is publicly available, it can only be accessed by devices connected to your local area network.

The device is placed in the folder associated with the enrollment rule and receives the Smart mobile device profile applied to the folder.

To install the ANS Enabler on an Android device:

1.Download the ANS Enabler from the Wavelink Web site.

The server address should be entered as the Smart device server's hostname or IP address. Unless the IP address is publicly available, it can only be accessed by devices connected to your local area network.

The device is placed in the folder associated with the enrollment rule and receives the Smart mobile device profiles applied to the folder.

To initiate an update from an Android device that has already enrolled:

Launch the Avalanche Enabler app, navigate to the Maps tab and tap Sync.
